Photos from Watchic Lake

FALL HAS SETTLED IN LIKE THE VEILS OF FOG
THAT DRAPE THE LAKE'S SURFACE IN THE
MORNING...

Gone are the brillant-colored leaves, the sound
of children laughing and splashing in the
crystal, clear
waters of Watchic Lake, and the
elusive cry of the loons slowly dies to a whisper
as Fall deepens into winter.

MILFOIL INVADES LAKES
IN THE REGION

THREAT OF MILFOIL INCREASES
AS LAKES AND WATERWAYS IN
THE AREA BECOME INFECTED

WINDHAM WATERWAYS AFFECTED

"Little Sebago: A 2003 survey by the Little Sebago
Lake Association showed that the most densely
infested areas are in the NW quadrant of the Lower
Basin, Mumford Cove and Beaver Cove (both in
the Middle Basin), in the Narrows (between Middle
Basin and Upper Basin) and in several locations in
Upper Bay. Numerous individuals and smaller
scattered patches in other regions of the lake have
also been mapped. L.S. Lake Association conducts
extensive annaul removal project using diver-assisted
suction harvester.

Collins Pond: Downstream from Little Sebago
Lake. DNA testing of a sample from Collins
Pond confirms that the hybrid milfoil is present.
C.P. Association continues to manage the
infestation using benthic barriers & diver-assisted
suction harvester (new in 2010).

NAPLES WATERWAYS:

Songo Locks:  Found above and below Lock.
Removal above Lock begun in 2004 using
benthic barriers, hand removal and suction
harvester.

Bay of Naples (Brandy Pond): Discovered
by resident in the north end of pond at the
Causeway Marina. Lakes Environmental
Association (LEA) reported finding to DEP.
The infestation appeared to be in early stages
and was hand removed by SCUBA divers in
the fall of 2004. Continued monitoring and
control conducted by resident volunteers
and LEA."
